Time to repeat myself once again and dont get me wrong, I love, Just love these stories and only wish this old guy was back in my college days to experience what these young gentlemen have before them.
In most instances, the scholarship ride to college is making a jump shot, reaching the end end zone or cranking a ball out of the park for a home run. Here we Brenden Farley and Weston Bison getting there ride to Lander University by the way of a Bass fishing Scholarship.
Lander University is located in Greenwood, SC and for these to high school seniors, Brenden from Summerville High School and Weston from Ashley Ridge the sky is the limit.
Brenden who is originally from Arkansas and moved the area in 2016 helped start the Summerville High program. He has been a passionate fishermen dating back to his early childhood.
Hunter Ellis is the bass fishing advisor for Lander University. Ellis was at Lake Moultrie last year when he recognized them both fishing in the tournament. He was very impressed with the both of them and wanted to give them the opportunity to be on Lander’s angling roster. Ellis further mentioned he hopes the more they travel to competition areas in Alabama, Florida, etc that the word will get out about Lander and it will help them advance the program even further.
The college chooses a number of tournaments each year from the Fishing League World (FLW) and the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS). The funding for the tournaments and the scholarships are mostly generated through fundraisers, sponsorships and grant money.
As mentioned in my previous articles and most recently my article on Presbyterian College the field of anglers are changing. Jordan lee, who won his 2nd Bassmaster Classic was also a former college champion. They both hope to follow in his footsteps and make it to the top level in the sport. Good luck to you both and we wish you well from CatchinBass.
